Heroes? We have thousands of them
|
Ask a NC Mason if he knows any heroes. Hell probably rub his chin and then talk wistfully about the unselfish deeds of a past master or about George Washington.
Chances are he will not say he knows of thousands of heroes scattered from the mountains to the sea. But in truth he does.
In faithful accordance with their obligation, Freemasons are out there visiting sick and well brothers, helping folks down on their luck, fixing broken lodge halls, righting wrongs, comforting families at funerals, signing petitions of promising young men, and digging into their own pockets.
In 1976 Noble Doug Mayes came up with the Oasis Newspaper Crusade. Asked fellow Shriners to stand weekends outside foodstores to give away one-edition-only newspapers in return for whatevers-in-your pocket.
Raised twelve million dollars.
Thats just the beginning. Consider, please, the countless, endless barbecues, golf competitions, bowl games, circuses, tickets to whatever, popcorn and pork in all its edible forms. Ask any Mason of any age if hes ever raised money as a Mason for his brethren and for his community. His eyes will surely roll as he tries to remember them all. Like the cost of treating crippled and burned children, and kids with reading disabilities.
Then ask him if hell help out with the newest fundraiser and without hesitation hell say, Tell me about it.
