Asheville, Halifax, Kinston, Waxhaws:
Heroes among Masons
Years ago the Grand Lodge of NC Masons approved a plan to honor brethren who were and will always be heroes. A list of unquestioned heroes by name was also approved and provision made to manufacture an initial supply of granite markers reading,

A HERO AMONG MASONS
GRAND LODGE AF&AM OF NC

to be ceremoniously installed at the graves of historic heroes.

Getting authority from cemeteries was another matter. In the past, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy faced questions about approval of their own markers from surviving family and church committees charged with cemetery care. The NC Grand Lodge is likewise confronted by similar questions, delays, even refusals.

The first monuments have been erected with proper approval. Today they stand imbedded at the graves of Zebulon Vance in Asheville, Joseph Montfort in Halifax, Richard Caswell and Abraham Hodge in Kinston, William R. Davie in Waxhaws and William Mecklenburg Polk in Raleigh. The flow of installations will continue, duly honoring more Masonic heroes who have entered eternity.
