A Descendants Farewell
To endorse the historic placement of the monument, A Hero Among Masons, at the grave of William Polk July 12, 2008, author William R. Polk in Vence, France, prepared this statement to Wayne Schindler, Raleigh Parks Superintendent:
William Mecklenburg Polk was one of those rare men of which no nation can have enough. A committed man, he joined the fight for American independence while still a boy, fought throughout the Revolutionary War despite having been severely wounded, and then, upon the achievement of the great goal for which he had struggled, he became a man of peace, a builder.
Today, it is easy to forget how perilous were the confusing times just after the Revolution when Will and his father Thomas followed the lead of Alexander Hamilton in pushing for the creation of our Constitution and the civic institutions under which we still live. He devoted much of his energy to building a bank that would make orderly development of the new nation possible. Like many men of his time, he believed in westward expansion and played a major role in the first step toward Continental America.
But even more, Will recognized that our nation could not exist in ignorance and so he committed himself to the creation of the great university at Chapel Hill. He was, in short, a man for all seasons.
