Brother Terry Sanford as Duke University President
|
His full name on his Masonic petition: James Terry Sanford. Throughout his three careers as Governor, President of Duke University and US Senator, his Masonic ethics prevailed.
NC citizens faithful to UNC joked, Duke knows whats best; they chose a Carolina man as its president. But as Dukes leader for 16 years, Governor Sanford transcended rivalries to influence North Carolina society with patience and wisdom.
He defused student unrest over the Vietnam War. Addressing protests with both tolerance and determination, Sanford met with students to successfully avoid college shutdowns that plagued other campuses. He maintained the open door policy he remembered from his closeness to Dr. Frank Graham at Chapel Hill. He ended the years of Dukes discrimination against admission of minorities. A staunch Democrat and ally of President Kennedy, he worked hard to bring Republican President Richard Nixons presidential library to Duke.
His always excelled--as a WWII paratrooper, leader of the UNC Institute of Government, Boy Scout executive, FBI special agent, author, arts advocate, founder of the NC School of the Arts and Democratic leader.
He campaigned for the US presidency but was sidelined by declining health. He rests in the Duke University Chapel.
