School of Graphic Arts fulfills the highest definition of charity
|
Maimonides was an Egyptian physician who lived from 1135 to 1205. He listed eight degrees of charitable giving which were progressively more virtuous. The first was to give, but sadly. The second was to give in good humor. And so on until Number Eight: not to give alms but to help the poor to rehabilitate themselves by lending, taking them into partnership, employing them or giving them workfor in this way the end is achieved without any loss of self-respect.
The School of Graphic Arts, within the scope of The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, beautifully fits this sage definition. Collectively, the school is self-supporting, offering vocational education of the Home while meeting the printing needs of 800 customers. Individually, it provides training to young people who can eventually earn wages and support their families throughout their adult lives.
Many use this training to work their way through college. Some hold important jobs in the printing industry as production managers, owners and entrepreneurs, publishers and vital production workers.
Students at the School of Graphic Arts work and learn from seven professionals in the fields of layout, design, color separation, printing and distribution. They study and work in complete computer pre-press services for typesetting and graphics including design from concept to completion, computer to film, camera and darkroom services, platemaking, scanning, copying, labeling, sorting, tabbing and maintenance of mailing lists.
Some but not all of North Carolinas nearly 50,000 Masons know that their lodge printing comes from their own School of Graphic Arts in Oxford. These youngsters help produce awards certificates, letterheads, visitors register books, lodge newsletters, greeting cards, minute and ledger sheets and educational brochures.
Its been going on for more than 130 years.
